Why Web Design?
The web design class is held after school, during 11th period. It is open to students of all three grade levels (6-8) to help students develop skills in technology and web design.
Why Web Design?
The Internet is a regular part of our lives. We go to numerous websites every week and devote many hours of our time to searching the web. Advertisers are using the Internet to reach more people, as are newspapers, TV stations and businesses. Even pet dogs have their own sites these days (though their human owners have to update the sites). What this means is we use the Internet a lot, but we don't always understand it.
When you create your own website, you really learn what it takes to make a website. You learn how to safely use the Internet and not become a victim to phishing attacks or viruses.
Most importantly, learning how to create websites is a marketable skill that students can use throughout their lives. More and more businesses are seeking people who have web design skills, even if it's in a career field that would seem to have nothing to do with the Internet. That's because more and more people are seeing how the Internet helps people stay connected and makes businesses run more smoothly and effectively. Students who go to high school and college knowing how to create and edit websites have a huge leg up on the competition and are putting themselves in a position to succeed.
What do you do?
Students in the web design course learn the history of the Internet, how the Internet works, what constitutes web design, how to read and use HTML and CSS programming languages and how to upload and maintain websites. Students create their own websites, adding elements that they want. It's a great chance for self expression and collaboration among peers. Best of all, it's a lot of fun.
Is it safe?
Absolutely. Students create their websites through a safe and secure web design service. The teacher has complete access to the students site and the student sites are password protected to keep students safe from child predators.
Do I need Internet access to be in this class?
While it does help to have a computer with Internet access at home, it is not essential. There is plenty of class time available to allow students to truly customize their sites.
How do I get started?
That's the easy part. Just stop by Mr. Hawkins' room (210) and talk to him. All you need is a desire to learn and the commitment to do your best.
